The Heirloom Tomato:
|
||
OK, in the interest of full disclosure, Amy Goldman is a friend of mine. We met six or so years back, in my first year as the host of “The Victory Garden,” when we spent a day with her filming in New York. She had just published her first book on heirloom melons, and was soon to follow it up with another on squash and pumpkins. Warm and welcoming, Amy impressed me immediately, not only with her breathe of knowledge, but with the tremendous dedication she brought to every one of her horticultural pursuits. We hit it off right away, and have remained friends ever since. So, you may be wondering how impartial I can be when reviewing Amy’s latest book, The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table. Well, here’s the scoop: Other authors I know have asked me to review their works, and if I feel that speaking honestly may be detrimental to our friendship, I simple bow out with some excuse such as, “Oh, dear, I’m so busy at the moment with design work….” Or, “Just off to a lecture tour, perhaps when I get back…” Fortunately, no such evasion is needed here. On the contrary. The Heirloom Tomato is a masterwork: incredibly, stunningly beautiful; thoroughly researched; eminently useful. Simply put: fantastic! Buy it now!. Use it this harvest season! Enjoy it forever!
